Finnish team FF Jaro announced Wednesday that American defender Giuseppe “Joe” Funicello has joined the club on a contract to the end of the 2013 season.
Funicello, 26, leaves behind two other Americans at Thor Akureyri, a club he spent the 2012 and the start of 2013 seasons with. He made 28 appearances for the team from the north of Iceland over the course of that time.
This will be Funicello’s second stint in Finland, having previously been at clubs IFK Mariehamn and VPS in 2010 and 2011. At Mariehamn the Connecticut native made 12 appearances before joining VPS where an ankle injury prevented him from featuring at all with the club.
Before that he played for the Real Maryland Monarchs of the USL-2 in 2009.
“I’m happy to be back in the Finnish Top Flight and I just cant wait to get started,” Funicello told YA. “I look forward to playing with my former teammates and under a coach who is know for keeping the ball on the ground.”
Jaro currently sits in fourth place in the Finnish top flight with 30 points from 20 matches played, only two points out of a Europa League place. The team cannot officially present Funicello until the international transfer window opens on August 6th.
